Muskies have teeth, as well as very sharp gill plates, and for those reasons, it is important to use some kind of leader when you fish for our Muskie friend.
I am partial to the use of solid wire stainless steel leaders. I have used them for years and I have never been disappointed with their performance.

Some years ago, I became frustrated with the unavailability of leaders in the sizes and configurations that I felt best complimented the lures that I was casting. I did a little research and acquired a leader making tool and began to make my own.
I have put together 3 different leader packages of 3 hand made leaders each.
The leaders are designed to compliment different lure types. Each leader uses .029 gauge 174 pound test brown stainless steel solid wire and a Duo-loc clasp. The Duo-loc clasp is used for its ease of use with surface lures, like Hawg Wobblers and for its reliability. |
The 7 inch leader package contains 3 leaders. They are designed to compliment surface lures. The shorter length allows the surface lure to develop good retrieve action. Two of the leaders in the package are without swivels. The reason for this is related to the fact that surface lures should not be twisting in circles as they are retrieved. One of the leaders is equipped with a ball bearing swivel. It has been my experience that some lures, like creepers, tend to roll during the cast before they hit the water. This twisting is transferred to your line and can, over time, cause backlashes.

The 9 inch leader package contains 3 leaders. They are designed to compliment bucktails and down sized crank or twitch baits. This package of 3 leaders has ball bearing swivels on two of the leaders. The reason for this is related to the fact that most bucktails will twist as they are retrieved. This twisting is transferred to your line and can, over time, cause backlashes. Crank or twitch baits should not twist during the retrieve and therefore do not need a swivel on the leader.

The 11 inch leader package contains 3 leaders. They are designed for use with jerk and larger crank or twitch baits. These leaders do not have swivels. The reason for this is related to the fact that swivels will tend to diminish the direct transfer of power from the line to the lure during the retrieve. These leaders will work very well with Jumping Jackpots, Mantas, Reef Hawgs and most other twitch/Jerk/glide baits.
